Hater genealogy

Our Hater family can be documented back to Jan Gerdt Harter (Haartr, Terhaart, etc.) born about 1680 in Raesfeld, Germany. He lived on the old Harter farm and was married to Catharina Busch.

The most recent common ancestor for both sides of the family (German and American) is Gerhard Henrich Harter, born in 1765 in Raesfeld.

Gerhard married Johanna Benning and they had 9 children. Johanna died giving birth the the 9th child when she was 37, The German Haters are from this marriage. Gerhard then married Adelheid Pennekamp 4 ½ months later. All of the American Haters are descended from his marriage.

Gerhard and Adelheid had 4 children. One of them was Johan Bernard. Due to the inheritance rights of Primogeniture, Johan had to move off the farm in Reasfeld. He moved to nearby Sudlohn (Nichtern) in 1841 or1842 and became a carpenter.

Johan married Maria Christina Wigger in Sudlohn in 1842. They had 8 children, 3 of whom died young.

Father: Johan Bernard, b.1814 Mother: Maria Christina, b. 1818 Son: Gerhard (George), b. 1842 Son: Johan Leopold (John), b. 1845 Daughter: Gertrude (Zeta), b. 1850 Son: Heinrich Anton (Henry), b. 1851 Daughter: Maria Sophia (Sophie), b. 1858

Johan and Maria’s oldest son, Gerhard (George) emigrated to America in July, 1862 at 19years of age, He had been working as a day-labored in Germany.

In February 1864, George’s father Johan Harter died at age 49 of a ‘Chest fever’. His widow, Maria, emigrated with her 4 remaining children in September, 1864, to join George in Cincinnati.

The family sailed on the Bark Gutenberg from Bremen to Baltimore, arriving in the USA on November 7, 1864. They joined George in Cincinnati.

The two daughters married German men in Cincinnati. Gertrude Elizabeth (Zeta) married Heinrich Kersting, and Marie Sophia (Sophie) married August Hoffamnn.

The Hater brothers entered the shoe business in Cincinnati. George was the shoemaker, John ran the business, and Henry travelled to New York to buy leather hides.

This was the perfect time to enter the shoe business since they were able to capitalize on the latest high teck invention – machine-made shoes.

Eventually George moved on to operate a shoe store in Price Hill for many years; John stayed in the shoe business, expanding to dry goods: and Henry devoted his time to politics and to his many business and civic affairs.

Henry married Maria Angela Weichard and they had a son Harry John Hater who married Viola Eckerle.
